There is one big question in my mind. It has been exist in my head when I studied in elementary school until now, when I have finished my master degree. As the title of this writing, the question is: “Why do student tend to happy when their teacher/lecturer cannot teach them?” I and all friends were happily laughed to hear the information about the absence of our teacher. Especially for some teacher who was boring in classroom communication.
Now, I become a teacher/lecturer. Someday I cannot teach my student because I was sick. As I lied on my bed, I think about my student. In my mind: “how poor they are. They cannot receive the materials that they should receive”. But after that, I re-think “hmm, do they sad when they cannot meet me in class, or maybe they happy because they can free from me”
I didn’t find the answer of that question. It was because I didn’t try to find it. May be I was afraid that the answer will be disappoint me. As the time goes by, now that big question was in my mind again, especially when I heard a group of student chatting about their lecturer. They were sad because the lecturer cannot teach them that day. HOW COME? HOW CAN? How lucky that lecturer because the students miss her and really want to meet her in classroom!
I try to find the answer of these questions. I discussed with a group of students, here the facts I found :
- Students will love to learn if they know the direct advantages of their meeting in classroom. so, don’t forget to tell them the advantages off their classroom meeting with you. Make the advantages as clear as possible and concrete.
- Students will love to learn in classroom when the methods of learning is interesting. so, we must creatively choose the right methods to teach student, or mix some methods that will make them interested. Don’t forget, the methods should make them actively involved in classroom communication. Don’t make them as object, but make them as subject of their learning activity.
- One of success indication of students learning is their final score. Students will love to learn if they know clearly the components and criteria of their final score. So, we must let them know how we evaluating their learning result.
I, myself, still trying to apply all the facts I found. It’s simple to write it, but quite difficult to apply. Hopefully, all teacher/lecturer have an intention to make their students learning activity become happy activity. it is not about to be favorite lecturer but it is about our responsibility as facilitator of students learning activity.
